Semi-Technical Rescue

Home - SAR Challenge

Stations:

Objectives: Teams will lower and raise a loaded litter (25 lbs/member) along a multi-pitch slope.  The multi-pitch slope is two lengths of the rope, so teams will need to establish two anchor points to complete the slope.  Teams will lower the litter to the mid-point, secure it and team members, move anchor to mid-location and complete the lower.  The process is reversed on the way up.  All systems must pass a whistle test in which the system must not fail (fall or drop) in the event no one is actively engaged in the system.  Teams will be given a maximum of 1.5 hours (90 minutes) to complete this station.

Each system will need to be constructed with two lines: a main and a belay.  Although any system may be utilized, the preferred method is given in Conterra’s Technical Rescue Riggers Guide (isbn 0-9665777-0-1).  Safety factors are based on the mountain rescue protocol of 10:1.

Litters will be equipped with accelerometers to measure the handling performance of the team.  Teams will be penalized for rough handling of the litter.

Teams will be responsible for constructing and managing the systems, as well as tending the loads.  Haulers and belayers will be provided.
