Objectives: Given a variety of natural material and utilizing the contents of your pack construct 2 (five person team) or 3 (six person teams) emergency shelters that will withstand a 5 mph wind and a one (1) minute rainfall in the least amount of time. Teams will be required to briefly inhabit each shelter and each shelter must safely provide the ability to house a heat source (candle). A candle will be placed in each shelter and the shelter will subsequently be exposed to a 5 mile per hour wind (from a fan) and exposed to a one minute simulated rainfall from a sprayer. The candle must remain lit throughout the wind and simulated rain exposure. Teams will have a maximum of one (1) hour to complete this task. No prefabricated shelters such as tents, bivy sacks, tarps, hammocks, etc are allowed for use during this event. Material Provided: - Variety of natural material commonly found in the wilderness. Additional Material Required/Permitted (Not provided by organizers) - Any material carried by teams is permitted with the exception of o No prefabricated shelters such as tents, bivy sacks, tarps, hammocks, etc are allowed for use during this event. Rules: - Any use of unauthorized material will result in a time penalty of 60 minutes. - Shelters not capable of housing at least two (2) adults will be given time penalty of 15 minutes. - Shelter incapable of safely allowing the use of a heat source (candle) will be given a time penalty of 30 minutes plus the “test failure” time penalties for wind and rain. - Shelters not withstanding the wind test will be given a time penalty of 15 minutes. - Shelters not withstanding the simulated rain test will be given a time penalty of 15 minutes. |
